Blood and Moonlight by Erin Beaty
3 Star Review

Blood and Moonlight by Erin Beaty is letting off all the Jack the Ripper vibes. Catrin, a 17-year-old orphan resides with the master architect in the City of Collis building the sanctum. When numerous prostitutes are murdered and women turn up missing, Catrin partners with Simon to investigate the murders.
Blood and Moonlight is a YA WHODUNIT murder mystery, mixed with a little bit of fantasy and a splash of romance. I personally had a love hate relationship with the characters. Each character had their pros and cons to them. For the most part they were all very strong, relatable characters. I enjoyed how Beaty incorporated mental health and the importance of how the loved ones of people with mental illness struggle along with those affected. And the cover of this book is GORGEOUS. I am a “judge a book by the cover” kind of reader and this cover immediately drew me in. However, I do not see the correlation between the cover and the book itself.
Overall, this book really was not my cup of tea. I felt the length of the book was excessive for the storyline causing it to feel as if it was being drug out. I did not like how all male characters in the book fell in love with Catrin and the relationship between Simon and Catrin felt forced. Blood and Moonlight had many exciting moments that would end abruptly followed by long sluggish moments. I enjoyed the short chapters as I found myself having to put the book down frequently and come back to it. The book really picked up at the end wrapping up all loose ends. I began to have my suspicions, but it wasn’t until the very end that I discovered who the killer was.
Despite my feelings for Blood and Moonlight, I would still recommend this book to any reader who enjoys medieval WHODUNIT, fantasy type reads. Erin Beaty did a beautiful job writing this book. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read and provide my honest review. I have heard many good things about the Traitor’s Trilogy and plan to check it out.
