It was good but not what I anticipated

I love Tricia Levenseller's other books so I was excited to read this one and even more excited to see mental health representation in a main character.
I wanted to hard to like this book but itse pacing was just too slow and I just didn't connect with the characters the way I had hoped to.

So much of the book was the journey that it just left me bored.
I did appreciate that the character relationships didn't evolve instantly and the traveling was over the course of weeks rather than days which did add a more realistic aspect for me.

I do love the accuracy of the main character's anxiety and it was nice to have other characters be supportive and reactive as Ziva deals with everything on their travels.

The magic and world building worked for me and I love when a book has a map so those were all strong pros for me.
This felt overall more on the younger side of YA which isn't what I was expecting. I will still read the next book as I am definitely invested enough in the story to find out how the story ends.
