This is a new-to-me author. Ziva's struggles with anxiety and self-doubt will likely resonate with many readers. Social anxiety isn't commonly addressed in novels, though it should be. Ziva's relationship with her sister Temna is one of the best parts of the story. There is a romance angle, but it's not overpowering. The magic elements add a unique angle to the story. There was an unexpected, but very welcome, twist, and the ending leaves the reader anticipating the next installment of this duology. While the world-building wasn't quite what I'd expect for this genre, this was an enjoyable fantasy read overall. I look forward to the sequel, as well as other books by this author.

Some of my favorite quotes:

“I hate feeling as though I don't fit right in my own skin. As though the anxiety takes up too much space, pushing me aside.”

“I wish I could separate myself from the fear, to learn who I truly am.”
