Blade of Secrets opens with a strong start--right away the reader is immersed in the world of Ziva the blacksmith. The opening has a dash of humor, thanks to Ziva's sister, Temra, who is all sass and cutting remarks. Ziva, on the other hand, is more at home in the forge than with people, something I can definitely relate to. While she can muster the strength to stand up for herself in the moment, it takes a toll on the anxiety she grapples with.

I find the premise of the book so intriguing. From the start, we're given two strong voices with distinct differences, and I'm happy to see where their story takes us. However, I did also find it hard to cement myself in the book's setting. Just when I thought I had it pinned, there was a mention of a restaurant with menus and a waitress that seemed out of place in a medeival-ish fantasy world...so much so that I thought maybe it was an urban fantasy. I look forward to reading the book and getting more world-building as it goes.
