Jumping in to review a book starting at chapter five is a new experience for me and not necessarily one that I liked. I was lost throughout. I gather that its a black-mans going of age book (I think) and that really excites me and I want to read more, bu ideally from the beginning!

There are elements of humour and a well written feeling of 'other' which is a welcome change in novels of this style but I still feel a little lost. As I said I don't know whether this is because the author struggled to write or because I was just thrown in at the deep end?

I wonder if my review would have been different if we had received a copy of the novel from the beginning? After all I remember at primary school making sure there was a beginning, middle and ned to my creative writing. I imagine so as I would like to think that the author is a better writer than this excerpt has made him out to be.
