I am so glad that I picked up this book even though I really questioned why at first. Black Buck is Mateo Askaripour’s debut novel and I am already looking forward to see what he will write next.

This book is satire, people and situations are over-the-top, yet hard truths ring through about today’s society and the corporate world. I found myself really paying attention to Buck’s sales advice and enjoyed those snippets throughout the book.

Darren was the valedictorian of his prestigious high school, yet four years later is still working at Starbucks, living with his mom, and content with his unambitious life when a start-up executive plucks him from that life and gives him an opportunity he can’t refuse. Really, he tried. He is thrust into a life far different than the one he has known in Bed-Stuy with crazy sales training and antics, money, parties, and, as the only black man in the company, a new name as well- Buck.

What his family and friends had always wanted for Darren is what he is trying to deliver, but they are not so excited with this new version of their friend. With the wild ride he is on, things can and do go off the rails and Buck has to figure out how to make this life work for him and for other people like him.

This book is sharp, quick-witted, and fun. It was unexpected and that usually makes a book stand out to me! It provided some great discussion for the #SaturdayBookstaClub and more than one friend has heard me bring it up in conversation since I read it. It stuck with me, and I am so glad that I joined in to read this. The bright colored cover isn’t the only thing that stands out about this book.
