Black Buck is such a unique book. It’s written as a pseudo memoir and has random tidbits of sales and life advice to the reader throughout the book which I loved. It’s comical, satirical and the first part of the book had me cracking up. Darren “Buck” Vender is happily working at Starbucks, but sales company CEO Rhett pushes him to take a job at his company, Sumwun. What could be a big break for Darren definitely challenges him and also changes him. Most of his coworkers are pretty racist and can be pretty cruel. Darren forms a group called Happy Campers to try and get more people of color into sales. This quickly turns into a bit of a race war and the ending was a bit crazy. I loved the writing and I flew through this book. It was super engaging, and at times uncomfortable, but that was the point. It brought to light more clearly the challenges BIPOC people face in the workplace. I’m hoping book will be as impactful for others as it was for me. This book is one that will stick with me for a while. The only thing I struggled with was the pacing. The different parts of the novel sometimes had long gaps of time in between them and I wanted to know what happened in those gaps. I can’t believe this was a debut novel and I can’t wait to see what he comes up with next!
