I really enjoyed this book. I am giving it a 3.5-4 star review. This is a satire.
This book is about Darren who is a manager at a Starbucks. He gets enough guts to interact and “sell” a businessman a new type of coffee. The man likes his sales tactic and sees something in Darren. He hires Darren at his sales firm. He starts earning money, but greed and the environment changes him. He is no longer Darren; he is Buck. His girlfriend, mother, and friends all see a changed man. Throughout the book, the author discusses important race issues: racism, white privilege, reverse racism, gentrification, stereotypes, and microaggressions. The author also made it similar to a self help book with advice for sales.
I enjoyed the book a lot in the beginning and the middle. The ending was a little over the top for me (I do understand it is a satire though). The characters at the beginning were likeable but as the book went on, I just lost interest in what happened to them. I will recommend this book though. The story flowed nicely for the 1st half of the book. This book talks about a lot of important issues in society. This novel sparked a lot of conversations with others.
