Thank you to @Libro.FM for an ALC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

4.5/5

Darren is waiting for something great to happen. After being valedictorian of Bronx Science, he knows he's capable of great things. But he's become complacent working at Starbucks, living with his mom and hanging out with his girlfriend Soraya in his free time. All of that changes after a chance encounter with Rhett Daniels, CEO of Sumwun, the hottest tech startup of NYC. As Darren becomes another of the salespeople on the 36th floor, can he hold on to what made him happy from before?

This was a very fun book! And super different from what I usually read, which is either sci-fi/fantasy, or contemporaries with yougins in high school/college. What is the adult workforce? I don't know them haha. I'd heard a little bit about this book before, but it just sounded like a romp and I decided to try it out. I don't regret it one bit! This was a wild ride.

I really liked Darren, he was easy to relate to and an interesting guy. There were times his emotions got the best of him, but everyone has flaws. I liked that he had perseverance. The office dynamic of this book was something else. There were the awfully racist characters (Clyde), and the ones who think they're doing the right thing but also committing numerous microaggressions (Rhett). Which to be honest, they both made me sick at points, more so Clyde--he's the literal worst.

This book had so many twists and turns and I saw zero of them coming. Askariour manages to discuss the intersection of race and business in a way that clearly showcases the ridiculous shit people of color have to put up with thanks to white supremacy. Also this is a satire, so there are several good chuckles thrown throughout. The way Darren narrates this was just so good as well. I really loved that the fourth wall was broken several times, it's something I enjoy.

I don't know what else to say because I enjoyed this so much and I don't want to go into anything too spoiler-y. I hope Happy Campers somehow exists in the real world. I wish the ending had been a bit different. Damn, this was so good!!!
