In some ways I really liked this book. The way in which it exposed the systemic racism present in society and how it played out in Buck's life was well done even as it was disturbing (which it should be). The fact that it was not a classic "happy ending"
was also refreshing because there really isn't a happy ending for this kind of story. However, I didn't enjoy as much the depiction of the debauchery that is part of the tech-startup lifestyle. I realize that this is probably a realistic depiction of what it's like in that world, it's just not something that appeals to me. I know in some ways it is probably meant to trigger a negative reaction in the reader and make us question the kind of society that celebrates these kind of businesses. But for me I just was turned off by it enough so that it made me not care about what happened to the characters as much as I would if perhaps Buck had pushed back against it more. The flipping of his switch to someone who saw the problems to someone who embraced them for his own gain was just a little too easy for me to sympathize with his situation.
