Twenty Two year old Darren lives in Bed-Stuy with his mother, who wants nothing more than to see him live up to his potential. But Darren is content working at Starbucks in the lobby of a Midtown office building, hanging out with his girlfriend, Soraya, and eating his mother’s home-cooked meals. All that changes when an encounter with Rhett, the CEO of Sumwun, a NYC startup, results in an invitation for Darren to join an elite sales team. After enduring a “hell week” of training, Darren, the only Black person in the company, reimagines himself as “Buck,” a ruthless salesman unrecognizable to his friends and family. But when things turn tragic at home and Buck feels he’s hit rock bottom, he begins a plan to help young people of color in America’s sales force. This sets off a chain of events that forever changes his world.

This book is part sales manual, part self help with a great plot line throughout. I was rooting for Buck. He made some bad moves and made some mistakes but he is still the guy you want to succeed. This book was laugh out loud funny. I mean the first half of the book I couldn’t stop laughing and started reading parts to my husband. The middle started to drag a little and the last part came out of nowhere! It’s funny yet deep and emotional and had me crying at times. The author tackles some tough topics with humor and ease.

Overall this is a book I won’t soon forget. It is labeled as satire and I think this is where it will succeed. Its creative and hard to believe a debut novel. This would make a great film I think too.
