I thought Black Buck was a ton of fun to read. It was funny, but it’s humor doesn’t undermine its ultimate message of Black power and community.

Darren is like no other main character, beginning as someone without much ambition, yet we know the shift he ultimately takes to being business-obsessed; his narration from the beginning of the book guides you and advises you to apply sales principles to everyday life.

There were some parts of this book that felt horrific, particularly the high-rise office he begins to work in, the white people within it, and the racism Darren must be humiliated by to move up in the company

My one complaint about this book is that the Black women in it were treated poorly—sometimes in a way that felt purposeful, something for our character to overcome—but often in a way that felt objectifying even when the author wasn’t trying to be.

While the way to get there was certainly odd, the ending was solid and ultimately supported Black solidarity. I would recommend this!
