Laura Spence-Ash writes in an easy readable style, giving enough details of the characters and setting without overburdening the reader with unnecessary details. The setting is WWII with bombs falling on London. One can relate to the anguish of Bea’s parents as they decide to send her to live with a family in the United States to keep her safe.

The book is definitely character driven. Bea and her temporary family become very real and dear to the reader as they share five years of life in America together. Brothers William and Gerald are close in age to the eleven year old Bea who awkwardly joins their family and bonds with them and their parents over time. Bea reluctantly returns home after five years, but that is certainly not the end of the story. Throughout adulthood, these characters continue to be drawn to one another. This is a touching story of people who grow and change but stay connected to one another.
