I finished this book last month but I like to give a great read time to marinate in my mind before reviewing. I wasn’t sure how to explain everything I felt throughout this book and transfer it onto paper.

I’m in my 30’s and this was my very first historical fiction book that I’ve ever read. I thoroughly enjoyed the timeline at the bottom of each page, I found it unique and also a great way to keep track of the characters throughout the time period.

I loved the multiple POV’s so that readers could feel the emotion through each character’s eyes. I couldn’t imagine living through what Beatrix endured and still find happiness at the end.

Readers experience and explore life with Beatrix, who was sent away to America when the first German bombs had hit near her home. The gas masks that the children wore to school weren’t enough to keep them safe. At eleven years old, Beatrix was placed on a ship and sent away to America where she would spend her life with the family of Mr. and Mrs. G.

Life is beautiful in America but Beatrix is also faced with heartbreak and tragic losses but she also finds love and friendship that will guide her towards a happy ending.
