I love the fact that this book has multiple view points. We get a view into the thoughts and feelings of not just the main characters, but those that interact with her. We see Beatrix, the main, character wearing a gas mask and keeping news articles in her room about the nerve gas. No child should have to worry about such adult matters. The decision that her parents made to send her to America was a complete tear jerker. As a parent, it would break my heart to have to make that kind of decision to keep my child safe. I am definitely looking forward to reading about Beatrix’s five year journey in America and how she recoups from the grief of having to leave her now home.
