Woah! What was that?! In Behind Every Lie, we learn that Eva, our protagonist, is engaged. We sit with her during her dinner with her family, celebrating her mother’s award. Next, we see her mother murdered, Eva is struck by lightning and she remembers nothing.

I was getting worried this would be your usual mystery/thriller. Fiancee that seems controlling could have killed the mother, or it could be the daughter, who seem to have secrets of her own, who killed her own mother. The usual. But we’re suddenly brought to London 25 years before on Kat’s (Eva’s mother) point of view, in a memory that Kat doesn’t seem to have shaken off after years. That totally turned everything.

McDonald writes a compelling narrative through Eva Hansen. She makes us wonder and ask before every chapter ends; she never fails to get our attention hooked. Although, the description of the appearance of every person Eva meets is kind of too much for my taste. Otherwise, she perfectly describes the anxiety and delusions (or was it?) of Eva.

Was really bummed the preview ended in such a cliffhanger! Must read for 2020!
