The book opens with the scene of a murder, although you are not sure who has been killed, or why. So you are interested in the story from the very first page. And believe me, it will hold your interest until you turn the very last page.
There are three main characters who lives are intertwined - the married couple at the heart of the story, and best friend Jo, who is there at the beginning and at the end, but who is part of the story throughout.
Ian has been a soldier/bodyguard and seen the worst that this world has to offer. This has hurt him emotionally but the question is whether he is too damaged to be able to truly love and be trusted.
Maddie has recently been disfigured in a camping incident with murky details. Could Ian have hurt her, and if he did, he will try again?
Much of the story is told through the therapy sessions that Maddie has with Cami, her therapist, trying to figure out the truth of what happened camping and how that figures into their relationship at large.
The story is told by different characters throughout, and skips between the day of the murder, the distant past, and the recent past since the camping incident. Each piece plays a part in creating the big picture.
The ending is a surprise, that's for sure.
