This novel was written in a way that held my attention throughout, and truly made me want to get to the "why" of the story. The fact that a killing has occurred is revealed almost instantly, but with the reveal of an in-depth backstory, Ward is able to slowly pull back the curtain and begin to explain. The character development was beautiful - both Maddie and Ian have some serious character flaws, and as the story progresses, you learn more and more about what events shaped them into the people they are now.

Though I suspected that the initial story of the killing told to the police was false, I wasn't on base at all in terms of how everything wrapped up. It is always a wonderful treat when I get through a thriller where I don't guess all of the details! Beautiful Bad was no exception.

On a personal note, the first chunk of the book is set in Bulgaria and Macedonia - an extra-interesting setting for those of us with family and friends from Eastern Europe! All in all, this was a solid 4-star thriller for me!
