Our main character is Maddie, and the story goes back and forth between the past and the present, as is the popular trend with storytelling these days. In the past, Maddie lived in the Balkans as a writer. The story details how Maddie met her now-husband Ian. Jumping to the present, Ian and Maddie have a son Charlie and they live in Kansas. Ian suffers severe PTSD issues (and alcoholism) carried over from the time back when he lived overseas, residing in several places but most significantly in Iraq during the war on terror. Maddie is suffering from serious issues of her own which include a recent camping accident when she was with Ian and Charlie, some resulting memory loss from the accident, as well as anxiety and stress related to Ian’s condition(s). All of this is leading up to a very tragic event (which the book actually opens chapter 1 with), which is where I will stop so I don’t give away any spoilers.
All I can say in conclusion, is go read this book. It was so riveting and it had me pulled in immediately. I loved the characters, I loved the setting, and I just loved how the story unfolded. I’m still sitting here shocked at the ending.
