The opening chapter draws you in. A 911 call with a screaming child and a pool of blood. That being said, the next 200 pages was a long winded drama up until the night of the crime.

Told in alternating timelines and point of view we unfold the events from the very beginning. Starting with learning about the relationships between the best friends. Two adventurous strong American women making their mark in European countries as a writer and nonprofit worker. They are living their best lives. Meeting with other expats, drinking and partying. What could go wrong? Maybe that they were residing in war torn countries that were not friendly with Americans? Yet as single women they didn't really seem to face a lot of trouble.

Setting aside the lack reality in their behaviors wandering these countries, we are supposed to believe the two girls are the best of friends. Other then travelling to unsafe destinations they do not seem to share a lot in common.

Then we meet the boy that tears them apart. Again, why? One supposedly hates him and the other likes him because.... he has an crazy bipolar girlfriend? He ditches her every chance he gets?

I think the story suffered from oversharing. It was such a slow burn with more character building then anything else. Which is pivotal to understanding the why of the end but doesn't really make you want to jump in to the story for the thrill. You are more a fly on the wall going... oh okay, makes sense. Yeah, saw that one coming.

Overall, average read. I could recommend much better but this one would hold its own to someone that loves character building.
