This book started off in the right direction – “Day of the Killing”. A small town, 9-1-1 call and obviously the signs of a homicide – who was killed, what happened, why did it happen?

Then the book flashes back to 10 weeks before when Maddie is in therapy after an apparent accident that disfigures her – though we don’t know why. We know there is a problem between her and Ian because of the list Maddie has made.

We’re then taken back to 2001 when Maddie is overseas teaching English to students in the Balkans when she meets Charlie.

From there the story is woven between the “Day of the Killing” and the past with Maddie and Charlie. Some of it seems like filler and it was hard to get a handle on this book. It seemed like it was all over the place in trying to tell what happened.

I think the author tried to get this to work, but it didn’t work for me.
