Beasts of Prey is a mythical YA fantasy story that follows our two main protagonists Ekon and Koffi as they both hunt for the mythical creature that has the power to alter their fates irrevocably. The story also flashes back in time to Adiah as she learns to wield her powerful magic and takes things farther than she should.

The world-building is rich. The writing is fantastic. The characters are complex. It's a very solid read with a lot to love. It's fast-paced and easy to get lost in the rich jungle and world of Lkossa. The protagonists definitely struggle to come back from the massive mistakes they made that threw their lives off course in the first place. It's a gripping tale about coming of age (and learning how to use magic along the way).

The only criticism I really have is that at times the characters didn't feel convincing. They fell into that trap of trying too hard to be "young" protagonists. There were some moments too where I found myself wanting to skip through scenes to get to the next portion of the story, but overall I think it was a really well written debut, and I can't wait to see how Netflix handles the adaptation.
