"Beasts of Prey" is set in a compellingly different world -- one with strange caged beasts in the Night Zoo where the beast masters are men and women indentured to and living within the zoo grounds.and with a vicious monster living in the Greater Jungle. This world is filled with magic, which is feared by many and therefore hidden by those who are strengthened by it.

Several young men and women are introduced in the opening chapters, and the focus shifts from one set to another. All of their various lives are fraught; the reader is immediately interested in their fears, their problems, and the people around them who may be helpful or hostile in their struggles for survival. For this is a world, described in lush detail through the characters' viewpoints, of fear, conflict and death -- as well as some wonderment at the presence of the world' s magical " splendor."

That is clear from the opening pages, so the reader is made aware of the contradictory nature of the narrative's mysterious locale, propelled further into the story to resolve the contradiction that is the foundation of "Beasts of Prey."
