Beats of Prey was hugely buzz worthy when I was lucky enough to get my hands on an early copy. That being said, I’m always super hesitant about buzzy books but I was dying to read it and jumped right in. Thankfully, the buzz is real!!!
This is the story of Koffi, an indentured servant to the Night Zoo and Ekon, a warrior in the making. The two teens cross paths and embark on a dangerous and magic journey to hunt down a fearsome creature called the Shetani.
Right form the start, the story is super interesting. Koffi is living at the Night Zoo where there are tons of magical and fascinating creatures. This was one of my favorite parts of the story and I wish we could have spent more time discovering this world. There was also heavy amounts of African mythology which beautifully added to Ekon and Koffi’s journey. The pacing was perfect. It had just the right amount of peril and romance for my liking. It even includes alternating time line stories, so the secrets and intrigue keep advancing. Overall, this was a fun and adventurous read and I cannot wait to see where the author takes this story.
