I want to give the book 3.5 stars. It was very hard to get past the beginning 100 pages or so the writing from different perspectives at a different time and then picking up with another character at a different time was unnecessary and distracting. It is not right away what time period you are reading and I can see how it could be confusing. Some of the story was predictable and yet just enough plot twits to satisfy.

The magical night zoo felt a bit out of place. And didn't really have a purpose other than setting up the story for the magical creatures and why anyone who enters into a contract at the zoo can't leave. That was really it.

Everything else takes place in the jungle and it's quite a wild adventure. Relatively fast paced and not a lot of mushy love stuff going on. just the way I like it.

Koffi makes it her mission to not let her mother and best friend end up in servitude for life so she heads out to do what must be done. Ekon wants badly to prove himself the warrior he is destined to be, even if he messed it up a little, he also sets out on a mission. They end up meeting at the mot inopportune time with the same goal in mind and different plans on how to achieve it. Let's not forget the magic. Koffi doesn't believe, Ekon can't fathom its existence. Yet it follows them wherever they go. Inside the jungle together they discover the truth about the nightmares and the rupture that broke the world. The problem? What choice will they make? Will Koffi give everything she has to save the ones she loved? Will Ekon do whatever it takes to prove he his worthy to his brothers?

Will read book 2 and will be expecting more though.
