I don’t know what took me so long to start this one since receiving it but I’m so glad I finally dived in! This book was very interesting and had a thrilling plot as well as intriguing characters that add to the crazy plot twists. This doesn’t feel like a debut novel and I’m happy I get to share my review with you! This will be spoiler-free. Sorry in advance for not going into too much detail but this book is one where you should experience it firsthand.

The book is told from multiple point-of-views: Adiah, Koffi, and Ekon. I wasn’t sure how they would all correlate at first but the author does a great job building up each character individually and then weaving them together. There was plenty of background information which made it easy for me to connect and feel something for the characters early on.

I can’t say that I had a favorite character as each one was just really interesting to read about because of their choices. Ekon has a good sibling bond with his older brother. It’s something I love reading about. Koffi is learning more about her family and what they can do which is a journey all on it’s own. Adiah is someone that I think many can relate to when it comes to being promised the world. I just really loved them all and even the side characters are great with their wittiness and wisdom.

There are a few settings in the book and the major one is the jungle. It is definitely a wild place (no pun intended, haha) with many unique qualities which includes the creatures that reside in it. Every time someone was in there the plot kept me on my toes and I felt like I couldn’t flip the pages fast enough. Some of those creatures just seem so terrifying but intriguing at the same time.

The pacing is well done and there isn’t many lull parts. The author does a great job of explaining everything from the religion, differences between class, how the indentured servitude works, to the creatures and plants mentioned. I never felt like I was missing anything or confused. There is also mentions of women being treated differently and it did have me questioning why I had like some characters in the first place! The plot is also filled with many plot twists. I did guess one but the rest had me shocked, especially that ending. I need the next book!

Overall, this was a great read. I can’t wait to see where everything goes in the sequel.
