What immediately drew me into this story was the 1960s ambiance and the fact that it was a gender-bent version of one of my favorite classics, The Outsiders. I was incredibly impressed with the author for getting me almost completely invested in not just the main character but her friend, Diane's, story. It was so insanely heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time and I just couldn't believe the ending of this book and the sheer emotional impact that it left me with.

This was another book that was great about looking at all sides of a situation and seeing things from someone else's perspective. Many of these characters in the book had prejudices against people who were different from them and so it was incredibly inspiring and emotional to watch them grow despite that. Diane and Evie's friendship in this book was definitely one of my favorites. It's rare that I completely relate to a book portraying female friendships but this was one I loved. Their bond was so deep and the love they had for one another is very close to the love I have for my best friend. Honestly, that was my favorite part of this book.

Like I said before, the feel of the book was enjoyable. There was a classic adventure feel to it that was very symmetrical to The Outsiders. I love it when modern books have storylines that you can usually only find in classics! Also, like The Outsiders, it held some darker themes. I love how the author modified these themes to be targeted towards the women of this time. She was incredibly accurate on how they were viewed and treated and she still created strong female characters despite those conditions. This is definitely a story that I'll never forget!
