Although it is a cliche that truth is stranger than fiction, some books never fail to make that the only phrase that seems to fit a book like BAD CITY. There is surprise - and yes, shock- with what goes on in the world, with what large institutions (whether they be educational or governmental, etc.) are willing to do to present a carefully crafted facade to the world. Paul Pringle's book has the added interest of being set in Los Angeles, a city whose name everyone around the world recognizes, a name that never fails to capture one's attention. An additional plus for this book is the detective thriller aspect. A reader has a fancy hotel, names of Hollywood celebrities attending events, sex, some sleezy characters including a young prostitute and powerful, respected individuals. This page turner book came about because there was a powerful newspaper with a staff supposedly dedicated to uncovering the truth. But they were going up against a powerful university whose staff was just as dedicated to covering up scandal, and some newspaper employees began to shun the investigation. Of course, this just makes the book all that more interesting.

Sometimes this book stirs up a lot of emotion, and anyone who has ever been a victim will undoubtedly feel some anger reading the part where people think there shouldn't be any further investigation because it happened a couple of months ago. The typical shove-it-under-the-rug and move on.
