I was really absorbed by this book. I expected to enjoy it going in, and I was not disappointed. Pringle did an excellent job of taking us through his journey of uncovering an almost unbelievable story of corruption, infiltrating our university system, our police system, and even our newsrooms. In a sense, it's not shocking. I think most of us are aware that corruption is everywhere around us, barely hidden beneath the surface. What makes THIS story so outrageous is the shocking level of shamelessness exhibited by nearly all of the main players. The corruption is so blatant that it's really hard to believe they got away with it for so long. Kudos to the Warrens for being brave enough to come forward and face down these monoliths. It's so incredibly sad how two young lives were so tragically affected by the actions of a man in such a position of power. Addiction is a hard beast to overcome and it is likely that these two individuals will suffer the consequences of these actions for the duration of their lives.
My only criticism of the book was the bit at the end about the doctor. I know it serves to illustrate that the university is kind of a hot mess and really not comprised of upstanding individuals (to put it mildly), but I don't think it really added to the story and seemed extraneous. In my opinion, it should have been either more fully fleshed out or (preferably) omitted altogether. All in all, a really interesting read!
