An Important Read

Bad City reminded me of all the reasons we desperately need independent investigative journalists, and all we’re losing as newspapers and news outlets push them aside in favor of quick and easy reporting.

Paul Pringle relentlessly chased this story, despite being warned off, putting ethics ahead of job security. The result was an explosive reveal of corruption on many levels, as well as extensive criminal activity.

Dr. Carmen Puliafito is a vile man who, for many years, destroyed lives for his own financial and sexual benefit. I was astounded by his reach, the people who shielded him, and all he was allowed to get away with while dean of a medical school.

I felt a few chapters toward the end didn’t really fit, with content rambling beyond the scope of the story, but overall this is an important, fascinating, and infuriating read.
