Bad City starts with Paul Pringle, a journalist at the L.A. Times, receiving a salacious tip from a hotel worker. A doctor, Carmen Puliafito, who turns out to be the dean of the USC medical school had been involved in the drug overdose of a young woman at the hotel. As Pringle and his team investigate, they find that Puliafito has been drawing vulnerable young people into a web of sex and drug addiction. What astounded the team of journalists was not only the cover up of Puliafito's behavior by the dean of USC and the Pasadena police department, but also leadership at the L.A. Times blocking and stonewalling the publication of such a hot, well-researched story. With courage and tenacity, Pringle and his team tenaciously pursued the truth about Puliafito which led to the discovery of two more scandals at USC. Their determination to unveil the truth and seek justice resulted in leadership changes at USC and the Times. Bad City was incredibly well-written, fascinating, shocking, and impossible to put down. I have the greatest admiration for everyone involved who persisted in exposing the truth, risking damage to their own careers, from the hotel worker Devon Khan, the health professionals at USC trying to protect patients, and the brilliant L.A. Times journalists. Bad City is one of the best non-fiction books I have ever read and a testimonial to the importance of investigative journalism.
