Reading the first impression of this book I assumed the entire book would be about the dean of medicine. As the book went on I realized to was more about the deep seeded corruption at the LA times and USC and I found it to be even more compelling and interesting as it delved deeper into the ways in which absolute power corrupts absolutely. The ways in which the various threads of corruption is woven into the fabric of very important Los Angeles institutions. The author had a good level of investment as well as distance from the subjects being discussed. I appreciated the ways in which he explained to the reader the politics of the newsroom and the ways in which a story would move through various levels of power to be published. It was clear to me the way things were purposefully slowed down to attempt to not publish the initial story. In the end I hope this book opens people's eyes to the way institutions are far from infallible.
