Bad Call is a fluid, quick read. The writing moves over the lives of four (4) teens over the course of a weekend hike in Yosemite. Stephen Wallenfels has focused more on the characters then he does on an intricate plot. But the characters are relatable. I think we all know or have known someone like these teens. The rich, spoiled kid who doesn’t understand the consequences of bad calls. The big athlete who is super competitive. The acolyte to the rich kid who never stands up for what he believes is right. Finally the pretty but intelligent girl.

Being character driven we have to believe each of these individuals is real. Bad Call does this well. Each of them has secrets within secrets, lies compounded by coverup lies. They are written well enough that I didn’t realize until the last third of the book that not much is happening. Once the action starts each of these teens reacts as you would expect.

I liked how everything unfolds. Being more than a few years away from highschool I think this is more of a young adult read.
