I like the idea of being able to make a wish on your 18th birthday that could help you for the rest of your life. However, that is also a lot of pressure to put on an 18 year old. At that age, a person hasn't really lived yet and yet they are going to make a wish that could and in this book does affect the rest of their life.

Throughout the story the main character asks other citizens about their wishes to help him decide what he might want to wish for but also to find out if they regret their choices. He learns some interesting things about each person and how their wishes shaped the rest of their lives. This all informs the decision the main character makes at the end of the book.

I didn't always find the main character very likable but honestly I don't think he was meant to be. I do think that he starts to become more likable towards the end of the book once he starts interacting with his new and old friends. I think the ending was a little disappointing but I understand the characters motivation.

I do think that people who like contemporary novels with some magical realism, who also don't mind unlikable characters will enjoy this.
