What an incredible novel about the flu epidemic of 1918, and I found it definitely an appropriate read during the Covid-19 pandemic.

This story is told from multiple points of view, beginning with Pauline, the mother of the family, shortly before she and her husband make the decision to relocate to Philadelphia for a new job opportunity for Thomas Bright, as an undertaker. Daughters Evie, Maggie, and Willa tell their tales in alternating chapters. There is a twist to one of the plot lines that was fun to figure out.

Death is a continuous theme...the death of the Brights’ infant son, the Great War, the flu epidemic...and it makes it ever so slightly dark, but there are moments of joy too, as the girls navigate the ups and downs of growing up.
