To be honest, reading a book about the Spanish Flu did not sound like it was going to be great read. I was wrong. It was something that I never really heard much about and while it is horrible it was not something that was of much interest to me before now. Much like reading books about the world wars, history was something I had heard about but it wasn't something I ever imagined I would reach for to read for "fun". Susan Meissner has changed my outlook on history. She is an amazing writer and has a way of bringing to life the stories of the people who lived in the past. This book was set during the time of the Spanish Flu but it was about so much more. It was about the effects of learning to live with death and heartache and loss. It is also a story about learning to love and hope and finding beauty in the midst of so much pain and suffering. It is a beautiful story. I found myself immersed in the lives of this family and my heart broke. I could relate in different ways, as we probably all can because the emotions are something we all deal with in life.

Love this book! (less)
