This story is set in Philadelphia during the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918. I read this novel during flu season of 2018, so it felt quite commemorative. Meissner does an excellent job of portraying the multiple facets of life, creating a novel that is at times a romance, a coming of age tale, a tragedy and remains historically enlightening. The story follows one family's journey through the flu epidemic, alternating between character point of view.
Although this is historical fiction, it rings true. When I set this book down I spent so much time walking the streets of 1918 Philadelphia in my head. Pondering what each family went through during this period. Meissner's story captured my heart and my mind, I would highly recommend this book to anyone!
