The Bright family moves to Philadelphia early in 1918. Mourning the loss of an infant son, Thomas and Pauline agree to help Thomas's uncle run his funeral parlor. The business gives the family financial security, even if the 3 daughters are initially teased for their father's profession. Everything changes, however, when the flu epidemic strikes. Thomas Bright has volunteered to join the war effort, and Uncle Fred cannot keep up with the flu victims brought to the funeral home. Pauline and Maggie volunteer to deliver food to victims in a poor neighborhood, a good deed that will forever change the lives of the Brights. Not only does the flu reach their family, but they bring home a baby boy, who the daughters end up raising.

Historical fiction/family saga with romantic elements. The haunting scenes of the worst of the flu epidemic will stay with the reader and are especially disturbing as this year's flu reaches epidemic level.

And I honestly did not get the play on the name/word "Bright" until I started writing this review...
