I can't say sing the praises of As Bright As Heaven loud enough. I loved this book. It's an extraordinary work of historical fiction set in Philadelphia during the Spanish flu pandemic and Prohibition era. The book follows a family struck by tragedy, who moved to Philadelphia to start afresh. The family moves in with their Uncle, the local undertaker, with the plan that the father would eventually succeed him in the business. Death is omnipresent and the nature of the business provides an extraordinarily unique vantage point from which the characters face the horrors of War, the Spanish Flu, and later Prohibition. The book follows the alternating perspectives of a mother and her three daughters as they struggle to make sense of a world turned upside down, and in their pursuits of happiness post-devastating heartbreak.
