As Bright as Heaven was a wonderful, insightful novel. I loved the characters, the mother Pauline and middle daughter Maggie were especially poignant for me. The book showed the pendulum of life with it's constant back of forth of joys and heartaches.
This is the first work of historical fiction I have read that used the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 as the backdrop. The author did a wonderful job bringing Philadelphia to life and painting a vivid picture of life in the early days of the twentieth century.
I was moved to tears several times and was equally overjoyed by the triumphs and loves of the Bright family. I truly savored this book, letting the moments soak into myself and living there inside me for a time. This is one of those rare books that I hate see coming to an end. I could have read another 400 pages because the story of the Bright family continues to resonate with me.
