I received an ARC through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review!

4.5/5

CW: past sexual assault (details never given), infidelity, and stalking

This book took me by surprise. When I got an email from Netgalley saying that I had gotten a freebie copy of this from the publisher, I was like “ehhh.” I’d heard of the authors and their first book, The Wife Between Us, sounded very stereotypical and uninteresting to me.

But, when I read the description of this book, I knew that I had to give it a go.

As most of you know, I’m in graduate school for social work, which is kind of adjacent to psychology/psychiatry. One of my courses for my first semester of grad school was, basically, an ethics course. I can’t tell you how many weeks we talked about the NASW Code of Ethics, then played out scenarios to get more into them. What I know is that the ethics for therapy largely follow the NASW code since a lot of therapists have social work degrees these days.

This story is all about ethics and morality and breaking them. Jessica decides to enter into a study on that topic, getting asked deep questions about whether something is right or wrong by a hidden psychiatrist, Dr. Shields.

And then Dr. Shields takes an interest in Jessica, delving further into lies and deceit and a game that only the psychiatrist understands.

No joke, I read the book in one day. I couldn’t put it down. I didn’t want to put it down. I started it around six in the morning and was finished with it by eight that night. It was completely addictive for me because of the angle it took of a therapist gone bad.

Having stepped back a bit from it, I can definitely see that it was predictable. I could see where it was going and what was going on, but it was just such a fun read that it didn’t take away from my enjoyment. Probably one of my favorite thrillers of the year, and I’m going to have to get it as an add-on for Book of the Month since it was one of the December choices.
