This story is set during WWII in Alabama so that should give the reader some context as to the language and tone. I wanted to like this book. However, Jesse seemed quite rude right off. While I get he is trying to keep his farm, the ungracious and rude attitude he shows Dolly right off makes him an unsympathetic character. Anna seems, at the beginning, quite impatient with him. Just the first chapter in I wanted to see her return home. There is also a returning war vet and a mystery going on in the story. What happens to Mr. Clanahan after his wife insults Dolly's cooking is a bit extreme, while being somewhat hilarious. Just teaches you to not insult someone's cooking. For some, the "Christian" tone could be a bit off-putting. Also, some have remarked about the "dialogue" being too Southern and commenting on the "inflection". Again, it's hard to get a feel for how those in the South talk unless you write it that way.
