The author of Almost Home, Valerie Fraser Luessa, tells a story with southern charm and grit.
Dolly and Si are taking in boarders to try to save their Alabama home. You begin to feel like you are living there too. We meet the retired professors, a couple whose marriage is floundering, a man raised nearby as a child, suffering from the mental and physical effects of the war, and an obnoxious couple who are quickly wearing out their welcome. There is also a young woman living nearby who becomes an integral part of the story.
There is good characterization throughout.
The other important part of this book revolves around a tale of a handsome pirate who disappeared with the preacher’s daughter on their wedding day many years ago. There is talk of buried treasure left behind. And then the mysterious journals begin to appear!
Ladies, curl up with a cup of tea, imagine yourself wrapped up in one of the hand made quilts talked about in the book and start reading.
This is a well written novel with an ending that will bring a smile and maybe a tear or to your face!
