The beginning of the book and the book's description confused me a little bit, because the book starts with a letter, and I didn't notice that it was dated 1944, and it sounds like crazy anti-Northerner post-Civil War talk, going on about carpetbaggers and suchlike. But I guess there is that super-duper-Southerner feeling in the book, still.
