At the start of WWII, Dolly Chandler and her husband, Si, take in boarders in their southern home in Alabama. There are munitions plants nearby, so people are moving to their town to work. Dolly comes across as a charming host, working hard to make ends meet and keep her guests comfortable. We hear a little about all of the guests and get to see the Williams, Jesse and Anna, arrive from the midwest. The novel starts with a chat letter from Dolly to her sister, Violet, who has moved away. This promises to be a story with engaging characters, and I already look forward to rooting for both Anna and Dolly.
