Alabama, 1944. Dolly and her husband Si are taking in boarders to help with expenses, still feeling the effects of the Depression. One couple, Anna and Jesse are young and from Illinois. The family farm could not survive the Depression and they have moved to Alabama. So far the book is from the perspectives of Dolly and Anna. Dolly, the friendly Southerner and Anna, a woman whose husband has turned inside himself and has not let her in.
Anna is sad that she had to leave Illinois, but she finds the house putting her more at ease with the decision. How will Anna and Jesse find their way home - in their hearts, not necessarily in Illinois. I was disappointed when the sample ended.
