I was particularly drawn to this book for two reasons: I was born and raised in the south, and my grandparents took in boarders during and after WWII. So, I related to the first look personally. I was magnetically drawn to the compassionate and larger-than-life character of Dolly, the home owner. She is talkative, without telling a lot of secrets, although it is obvious that she doesn’t care for one set of boarders. I’m looking forward to meeting that couple and discovering what Dolly means about their rudeness. I fell in love with Anna immediately, with her quiet and peace-making kind of spirit. She accepts her lot in life and encourages her tactiturn husband Jesse to do the same. My favorite thing about what I have read so far are the descriptions that not only paint a picture but they also give it more life with scents and tastes. I could just smell the sweet grass of Alabama on a hot April day and taste the heavenly sweet tea that I grew up drinking. I look forward to reading more of Anna and Jesse’s tale and how Dolly interacts with all of her boarders. What a great first look at a book that is full of promise!
