The opening of this book is already a difficult but important story to read. I do a lot of work in spaces that try to educate people TODAY on why displays like this should not occur, so to see it play out in the story time and again over decades is hard. We need these kinds of stories though, especially in a time when books are being banned for speaking the truth.
My favorite quote so far is:
"People accuse me of acting without thinking. The thing is, though, I’m always thinking. I just calculate differently. I think one thing: Right or wrong?"
I need to read the remainder of this book. I need to provide it in my classroom. I need to make sure these stories stay stories and don't keep repeating.
The writing of the author is superb. I was immediately drawn in and devoured this first look, and I cannot wait to finish this story. The cover conveys the connection between both eras well, I think, and I can't wait to see how this story plays out. Thank you for the opportunity to read this first look.
