This was an unexpected book. Although I would not call it a fast read I would say it was worth the time. It was a moving and emotional work and I will admit I may have shed a tear or two towards the end.
The book settles around two main characters both suffering a great loss. Emily loses her parents as a teen and 10 years later still hasn't faced the grief, choosing instead to ignore it and keep her self busy with studies and then work. She is assigned to work in a local church to organize their archives and discovers that this is the same church her parents were married.
Through her work at the church she is forced to confront her grief for the first time.
Elizabet loses her husband and never moves past her grief wishing to keep her husband alive through constantly reliving memories. When she herself passes in 1935 she does not find her beloved husband waiting on the other side. Her refusal to move past her grief has kept her a prisoner in the church, a place she considers her sanctuary.
As she watches over Emily she must also come to terms with her grief to move on.
The struggles and heartache and the way the author intertwines their lives was imaginative.
I recommend this book and would love to read other books by this author.
