All That Was by Tanya E. Williams was about Emily, a young lawyer that is assigned a church archival project. As she roots through church records to help preserve it, she learns more of the history and finds a diary. She discovers that she is connected through mutual suffering with the spirit of Elizabet that she eventually meets in the church graveyard. It is that shared pain of how her parents fatal car accident that Emily can’t escape from just as the Elizabet’s spirit that walks the graveyard still waiting for her lover that never came is still trapped at the church.

Though sad, this novel also brought out how the living lawyer and the dead spirit managed to help each other with grief and loss so they could grieve and move on. It blended historic elements of Seattle beautifully to relate their tale that was touching in how it resolved itself.

This is a beautiful, captivating novel that is an emotional read that can tug at your heart while also making your eyes water. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.
